about

We have David Colohan of United Bible Studies to thank for this latest recording; he shared a video of The Albion Band performing this song on regional television in 1981 on Facebook, I saw it and fell in love with it (once I got past the corny staging and the utter horror of seeing one of my musical heroes, Ashley Hutchings, dancing). By the third listen I felt compelled to record a version of it, and I knew it had to be with Alison singing. Thankfully she was up for it, and so here we have our first new work together in 6 years.

I've always felt that the 1980s must have been a strange old time to be a folk musician; if you were one of the young guns who made the 1960s revival so exciting, you were now pushing middle age, and the explosion of punk and new wave a few years earlier would have registered you obsolete with the 'year zero' youth of the day.

By the time The Albion Band recorded this in 1982 synth pop was prevalent and although they made some attempt to modernise their sound it would have still sounded old hat to anyone under the age of 25. Now, almost 40 years on, we can look upon records like this and see the charm. I'm now on the hunt for all of The Albion Band's '80s output in the hope of finding more gems like this.

Please do yourself a favour and check out the video I mentioned earlier, you can find it on YouTube here...

That's the wonderful Cathy Lesurf on vocals (*swoon*), my all time favourite drummer Dave Mattacks behind the traps, Simon Nicol on Kellogg's guitar, Jean-Pierre Rasle (?) on acoustic guitar, and Ashley Hutchings and Dave Whetstone up front dressed like a couple of holiday camp entertainers. Enjoy...!
