ENGLISH COUNTRY MUSIC was commissioned by Southend-on-sea’s FOCAL POINT GALLERY for their FPG SOUNDS project. FPG SOUNDS saw an impressive array of Essex-based artists who work within the medium of sound create new and exclusive works which were then hosted by the gallery on their website.

For the commission we sourced a copy of the 1979 book BUSHES & BRIARS: AN ANTHOLOGY OF ESSEX FOLK SONG, which contains versions of many well known English folk songs but in versions specifically collected in Essex. We then selected several songs, taking the traditional lyrics and setting them to all-new tunes and arrangements. From the dozen or so songs we selected and worked on, 5 were completed and delivered to FPG as our commission.

The 13 tracks contained on this bonus disc are intended to give the listener a little glimpse into the 6 month long creative process, from fragments of ideas and phone demos, to early mixes, work-in-progress backing tracks, live performances of the finished songs, and a special remix created for the Focal Point Gallery's own sound archive.
